Privileged account with an email address (T1078)

The account's mail attribute is set. It can be set without a real mailbox behind it, so check whether one exists.

Why it matters

A privileged account that gets mail can be phished, and its inbox can receive the password-reset messages that take it over.

How GraphnAI finds it

It runs after every sync, on each connected domain or tenant on its own. It applies to Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID.

It reads:

  • The directory attribute mail
  • The privilege tier classification

Tiered Fidelity™ level: Theoretical

Every finding from this check carries the Theoretical level.

  1. TheoreticalThis checkConfigured in the directory. Nothing else checked.
  2. ConstrainedA constraint on it has been checked.
  3. ValidatedTelemetry has seen it in use.

Why there's no automatic fix

Mailboxes are removed in the mail system, and removing one deletes its mail. GraphnAI doesn't make that change.

How to fix it

Give the administrator a separate day-to-day account for mail, and keep the privileged account without a mailbox.
