Privileged account with a password that never expires (T1078)

The password-never-expires flag exempts the account from the domain's password expiry policy. Group managed service accounts (gMSAs) are excluded.

Why it matters

A password leaked once stays usable until someone changes it, and the policy never makes anyone change it.

How GraphnAI finds it

It runs after every sync, on each connected domain or tenant on its own. It applies to Active Directory.

It reads:

  • The directory attributes userAccountControl and objectClass
  • The privilege tier classification

Tiered Fidelity™ level: Theoretical

Every finding from this check carries the Theoretical level.

How Select Fire™ fixes it

How to fix it

Clear the password-never-expires flag and let the account rotate on policy. For a service that cannot rotate on a schedule, move it to a group managed service account.

What Select Fire changes

Select Fire opens from the finding and simulates each change on your live graph before anything changes in your directory.

  1. Require a password change For user accounts.Semi-Auto, or Full-Auto when an Admin allows this action and every Full-Auto check passes. Never on a Tier 0 or Tier 1 account.

The account must set a new password at its next logon. A service or scheduled task running as it fails until someone does.

  2. Let the password expireSemi-Auto, or Full-Auto when an Admin allows this action and every Full-Auto check passes. Never on a Tier 0 or Tier 1 account.

Clearing the exemption puts the account back on the domain expiry policy. If its password is already older than the policy allows, it expires at once.
