Computer or group nested in an administrative group (T1078.002, T1098)

A computer account or group is a direct member of a Tier 0 administrative group. Every account inside it gets that group's privileges.

Why it matters

A computer in an administrative group gives admin rights to whoever controls that machine. A nested group gives them to anyone who can add a member to it, which is a much lower bar.

How GraphnAI finds it

It runs after every sync, on each connected domain or tenant on its own. It applies to Active Directory.

It reads:

  • The directory attribute objectSid
  • Group memberships
  • Criticality overrides

Tiered Fidelity™ level: Theoretical

Every finding from this check carries the Theoretical level.

  1. TheoreticalThis checkConfigured in the directory. Nothing else checked.
  2. ConstrainedA constraint on it has been checked.
  3. ValidatedTelemetry has seen it in use.

How Select Fire™ fixes it

How to fix it

Remove the member from the administrative group. If some accounts need the access, grant it to them directly.

What Select Fire changes

Select Fire opens from the finding and simulates each change on your live graph before anything changes in your directory.

  1. Remove group membership For computer accounts and groups.Semi-Auto: you authorize each change. Full-Auto never runs it.

Everything inside this member loses the administrative group's access. If any of it relies on that access to run, it will stop working, so confirm what is inside before removing it.
