Built-in operator group with members (T1078.002)
Account Operators, Server Operators, Print Operators and Backup Operators grant rights that reach the domain controllers. Most domains don't need them.
Why it matters
Their members hold rights close to Domain Admins, but the groups are rarely watched as closely.
How GraphnAI finds it
It runs after every sync, on each connected domain or tenant on its own. It applies to Active Directory.
It reads:
- The directory attribute
objectSid - Group memberships
Tiered Fidelity™ level: Theoretical
Every finding from this check carries the Theoretical level.
- TheoreticalThis checkConfigured in the directory. Nothing else checked.
- ConstrainedA constraint on it has been checked.
- ValidatedTelemetry has seen it in use.
How Select Fire™ fixes it
How to fix it
Empty the built-in operator groups and grant the specific rights an operator actually needs through a purpose-built group instead.
What Select Fire changes
Select Fire opens from the finding and simulates each change on your live graph before anything changes in your directory.
- Remove group membershipSemi-Auto: you authorize each change. Full-Auto never runs it.
Removing a member takes away the rights the operator group grants, which reach the domain controllers. Confirm what the member uses those rights for first.
By hand: Move each member to a group scoped to the work it does. The finding clears when the operator groups are empty.
