Posture check · Group Policy

Lower-tier account can edit a Group Policy object that applies to Tier 0 computers (T1484.001)

An account outside Tier 0 can change this Group Policy object, and the policy applies to domain controllers or other Tier 0 computers.

Why it matters

Whoever controls that account can add a startup task or a local administrator to the policy, and run code on every computer it applies to, domain controllers included.

How GraphnAI finds it

It runs after every sync, on each connected domain or tenant on its own. It applies to Active Directory.

It reads:

  • The directory attributes nTSecurityDescriptor and gPLink
  • The Group Policy control analysis, which runs with attack path analysis
  • The privilege tier classification

Tiered Fidelity™ level: Theoretical

Every finding from this check carries the Theoretical level.

  1. TheoreticalThis checkConfigured in the directory. Nothing else checked.
  2. ConstrainedA constraint on it has been checked.
  3. ValidatedTelemetry has seen it in use.

Why there's no automatic fix

Removing a permission from a Group Policy object also means changing its SYSVOL folder permissions, which GraphnAI can't do. Change the policy's delegation in Group Policy Management. To act now, open an account in the Graph Explorer: Select Fire can remove its group membership, or its permission to link policies.

How to fix it

In Group Policy Management, remove the account's edit rights on this policy, or remove the account from the group that holds them. Only Tier 0 accounts should edit policies that apply to Tier 0.
