Non-default account can replicate directory secrets (T1003.006)

This account can copy every password hash from the domain, or can give itself that permission. Only domain controllers and the built-in administrator groups need it.

Why it matters

Anyone who takes over this account can read every password in the domain without touching a domain controller.

How GraphnAI finds it

It runs after every sync, on each connected domain or tenant on its own. It applies to Active Directory.

It reads:

  • The directory attributes objectSid, userAccountControl and accountEnabled
  • Directory permissions (access control entries)
  • The privilege tier classification
  • The forest each domain belongs to

Tiered Fidelity™ level: Constrained

Every finding from this check carries the Constrained level.

  1. TheoreticalConfigured in the directory. Nothing else checked.
  2. ConstrainedThis checkA constraint on it has been checked.
  3. ValidatedTelemetry has seen it in use.

How Select Fire™ fixes it

How to fix it

Remove this account's replication and permission-changing rights on the domain.

What Select Fire changes

Select Fire opens from the finding and simulates each change on your live graph before anything changes in your directory.

  1. Remove the permissionSemi-Auto: you authorize each change. Full-Auto never runs it.

The account can no longer copy directory secrets or change the domain's permissions. Replication stops for anything that relied on this account. You can undo the change.

By hand: Remove this account's replication rights from the domain's permissions. Keep them for domain controllers and the built-in administrator groups only.

If someone uses it

This detection rule raises an alert when the attack this exposure invites shows up in your domain controllers' events.
